Bars and entertainment venues will remain closed for the “coming weeks” as a Covid-19 precaution, Prime Minister Robert Abela said on Wednesday.
He said that after consultation with Health Minister Chris Fearne, the decision was taken for bars not to reopen, as was initially planned, at the beginning of December, meaning they will have to remain shut for a bit longer.
“This was a very difficult decision but given the current situation we feel it is more prudent that these establishments remain closed for the time being,” Abela said.
“We remain sympathetic and supportive of everyone impacted by these difficult measures but safeguarding public health remains a priority.”
Abela once again reiterated that the Covid-19 situation is “stable and under control”, and said that with a vaccine only “a few weeks away” it is crucial for health services to remain stable.
